I was just chatting with my teammate about generational differences in China and the US. For our generation in the US, our parents were a product of the first real wave of consumerism. They spent, spent, spent, often on credit. We graduated in a recession and a credit crisis. We’ve seen the effects of that. Now, we’re pushing our parents and ourselves to save. Speaking for myself, I decided to pay off my personal credit cards and live without one moving forward. When I told my parents, they decided to do the same.
She is a product of the first real wave of consumerism in China. Her parents taught her the virtues of saving. Now, she’s pushing them to live in the moment.
She told me about a popular anecdote (and apologies in advance if some of the wording is off): An old woman in the US is dying and says, “I finally live in a house that is paid off.” An old woman in China is dying and says “I finally live in a house that I bought.”
